At some point you may decide to test out an alternative web browser, set up a different email client, edit an audio file, or try some new games (for example), and to do any of these you will need to install new software. Ubuntu keeps track of many different software \glspl{package}, and finding and installing what you are after is designed to be as quick and easy as possible. Alternatively, you may prefer to browse through the extensive library of available applications, and try any that catch your interest.
