The image on every monitor is composed of millions of little colored dots called pixels. Changing the number of pixels displayed on your monitor is called ``changing the resolution.'' Increasing the resolution will make the displayed images sharper, but will also tend to make them smaller. The opposite is true when screen resolution is decreased.
