Normally, you will add applications to your computer via the Software Center, which downloads software from the Ubuntu repositories as described in \chaplink{ch:software-management}. However, it is occasionally necessary to add software from other sources. For example, you may need to do this when an application is not available in the Ubuntu repositories, or when you need a newer version of the one available in the Ubuntu repositories.
