To start Banshee, open the \application{Dash}, then click on \button{Listen to Music} with the Banshee logo above it. You can also type \emph{Banshee} then click on the Banshee Icon, or browse the list of applications manually. Ubuntu 11.10 comes with an indicator menu for sound-related devices. This menu includes a link to start Banshee as well as basic playback and volume controls. To quit Banshee, move your mouse into the upper right corner and window controls will appear. Then, click the orange \textbf{x}. You can also click \keystroke{Ctrl+Q} on your keyboard. Banshee will continue to run in the background, but you can still control your music from the Sound indicator.

To play music, you must first import music into your library. Choose \menu{Music\then Import Folder} or press \keystroke{Ctrl+O} on your keyboard to import a folder of media, a single file, an Amazon Mp3 purchase or media from an iPod, iPhone or iPad. The Banshee toolbar contains most of the controls that you will use for browsing and playing your music. If you want to play a song, double-click a track or click it and press the \button{Play} button on the toolbar (you can also choose \menu{Playback \then Play} from the menubar or press \keystroke{Space}). When a song is playing, the \button{Play} button will become a \button{Pause} button. Clicking on it will pause the song. \button{Next} and \button{Previous} buttons are next to the Play/Pause button. You can click on these buttons to play the next and previous songs in your library or playlist. Banshee also has options to toggle \menu{Shuffle} or \menu{Repeat} modes. Banshee offers five different types of shuffling, all of which can be accessed by clicking on the drop-down menu next to \button{Next} button or by using the global menubar (\menu{Playback \then Shuffle}). Repeat controls are located in bottom right hand corner and through the global menubar (/menu{Playback \then Repeat}).
