Check to make sure that the microphone is not muted and that the input volume is an adequate level. If your primary input device is a sound card (for a microphone with a small jack) then be sure that the correct port is selected in the <guibutton>Connector</guibutton> drop-down menu.

Under the <guilabel>Hardware</guilabel> tab, make sure that your input device is listed. If it is, check to see if the <guibutton>Profile</guibutton> for the device is set for correct input. If your device is not listed, then either the device is not correctly connected to the computer or the sound card/microphone is not a supported device for input.
