The <emphasis>GNU Project</emphasis> was launched in January 1984 by Richard Stallman, to develop a complete UNIX-style operating system which is comprised of free software: the GNU system. Variants of the GNU operating system, which use the Linux kernel, are now widely used.
<emphasis>GNU-projektin</emphasis> aloitti Richard Stallman tammikuussa 1984. Sen tarkoituksena on kehittää yksinomaan vapaista ohjelmista koostuva UNIX-tyyppinen käyttöjärjestelmä. GNU-käyttöjärjestelmän ytimenään Linuxia käyttävät muunnelmat ovat nykyään laajalti käytössä.

The GNU project is closely linked to the philosophy of free software, which is central to the projects that derive from it, such as Ubuntu. The concept of free software is explained at <xref linkend="free-software"/>.
GNU-projekti liittyy vahvasti vapaan ohjelmiston ideaan. Samalla tavoin siitä johdetut projektit, kuten Ubuntu, vievät vapaita ohjelmistoja eteenpäin. Vapaa ohjelmisto käsitteenä on selvitettynä täällä: <xref linkend="free-software"/>.
