The <emphasis>GNU Project</emphasis> was launched in January 1984 by Richard Stallman, to develop a complete UNIX-style operating system which is comprised of free software: the GNU system. Variants of the GNU operating system, which use the Linux kernel, are now widely used.
<emphasis>Projekt GNU</emphasis> byl spuštěn v lednu roku 1984 Richardem Stallmanem za účelem vyvinutí operačního systému ve stylu UNIXu skládajícího se kompletně ze svobodného softwaru: systému GNU. Varianty operačního systému GNU, které používají linuxové jádro, jsou dnes široce využívány.
