The "X" in Xubuntu stands for the Xfce graphical desktop environment, but the word "Ubuntu" represents both the technical and philosophical core of the operating system. "Ubuntu" is a South African ethical ideology focusing on people's allegiances and relations with each other. The word comes from the Zulu and Xhosa languages. Ubuntu (pronounced "oo-BOON-too") is seen as a traditional African concept, is regarded as one of the founding principles of the new republic of South Africa and is connected to the idea of an African Renaissance.
O "X" no Xubuntu representa o contorno gráfico do escritorio Xfce, pero a palabra "Ubuntu" representa á vez a técnica e a filosofía básicas do sistema operativo. "Ubuntu" é unha ideoloxía ética Sudafricana enfocada as lealdades das persoas e as relacións cos demais. A palabra ven das linguas Zulu e Xhosa. Ubuntu (pronunciado tal e como se escribe) considérase como un concepto tradicional africano, é considerado como un dos principios fundadores de nova república de Sudáfrica e está conectado á idea dun Rexurdimento Africano.

A rough translation of the principle of Ubuntu is "humanity towards others". Another translation could be: "the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all humanity".

"A person with ubuntu is open and available to others, affirming of others, does not feel threatened that others are able and good, for he or she has a proper self-assurance that comes from knowing that he or she belongs in a greater whole and is diminished when others are humiliated or diminished, when others are tortured or oppressed."
"Unha persoa con ubuntu está aberta e disposta para os outros, apoia aos demais, non se sinte ameazada cando os outros están ben porque ten confianza en si mesma que provén de saber que pertence a un todo máis grande que é diminuído cando os outros son humillados ou diminuídos, cando os outros son torturados ou oprimidos".
