An <acronym>IP</acronym> address is a unique identifier, commonly known as the computer's address, that is used in communicating between other computers on a network and the Internet. There are two versions of <acronym>IP</acronym> addressing, <acronym>IPv4</acronym> which is the most widely used and the oldest, and <acronym>IPv6</acronym> which is newer. <acronym>IPv6</acronym> was created to cure the fact the world was running out of <acronym>IP</acronym> addresses.
Een <acronym>IP</acronym> adres is een uniek herkenningsnummer, over het algemeen meer bekend als het adres van de computer, dat wordt gebruikt in de communicatie tussen verschillende computers binnen een netwerk en met het internet. Er zijn twee versies van <acronym>IP</acronym>-adressering, <acronym>IPv4</acronym> die het meest gebruikt wordt en het oudste is, en <acronym>IPv6</acronym> die nieuwer is. <acronym>IPv6</acronym> is ontwikkeld om het feit te verhelpen dat de wereld niet genoeg <acronym>IP</acronym>-adressen meer had.
