Codecs for playing non-free formats are not included in Kubuntu by default. You can get support for the extra codecs by installing the <application>libxine-extracodecs</application> package.

Some of these packages may not be permitted in some countries: you should verify that you are permitted to use them before installing them.

Launch <application>k3b</application> by going to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>Multimedia</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>K3b - CD &amp; DVD Burning</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

If you want to burn MP3 files into audio CDs, you will need to install the <application>libk3b2-extracodecs</application> package. Please refer to the <ulink type="help" url="help:/kubuntu/add-applications/">Adding Applications</ulink> document for help on installing applications.

Open <application>Konsole</application> by going to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>System</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>Konsole - Terminal Program</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

At the command prompt type the following line and then press the <keycap>Enter</keycap> key: To save the md5sum of file.iso to a file, run: <screen> md5sum file.iso &gt; file.iso.md5 </screen>

Assuming that <filename>file.iso</filename> and <filename>file.iso.md5</filename> are in the same folder, type the following at the command prompt and then press the <keycap>Enter</keycap> key: <screen> md5sum -c file.iso.md5 </screen>

To mount Image (ISO) file type the following at the command prompt, pressing the <keycap>Enter</keycap> key after every line: <screen> sudo mkdir /media/iso sudo modprobe loop sudo mount file.iso /media/iso/ -t iso9660 -o loop </screen>

To unmount Image (ISO) file type the following at the command prompt and then press the <keycap>Enter</keycap> key: <screen> sudo umount /media/iso/ </screen>

Krita is installed in Kubuntu by default. Launch Krita by going to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>Graphics</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>Krita - Painting and Image Editing</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

Gimp

<application>Gimp</application> is a powerful graphics editing package similar to Photoshop.

Install the <application>gimp</application> package. Please refer to the <ulink type="help" url="help:/kubuntu/add-applications/">Adding Applications</ulink> document for help on installing applications.

Once installed, start <application>Gimp</application> by going to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>Graphics</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>Gimp</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

<application>Inkscape</application> is a powerful editor for working with the <acronym>SVG</acronym> (Scalable Vector Graphics) format.

Install the <application>inkscape</application> package. Please refer to the <ulink type="help" url="help:/kubuntu/add-applications/">Adding Applications</ulink> document for help on installing applications.

Once installed, start <application>Inkscape</application> by going to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>Graphics</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>Inkscape</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

Install the <application>blender</application> package. Please refer to the <ulink type="help" url="help:/kubuntu/add-applications/">Adding Applications</ulink> document for help on installing applications.

Once installed, start <application>Blender</application> by going to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>Graphics</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>Blender</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

Install the <application>scribus-ng</application> package. Please refer to the <ulink type="help" url="help:/kubuntu/add-applications/">Adding Applications</ulink> document for help on installing applications.

To install additional templates, install the <application>scribus-template</application> package. Please refer to the <ulink type="help" url="help:/kubuntu/add-applications/">Adding Applications</ulink> document for help on installing applications.

Once installed, start <application>Scribus</application> by going to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>Graphics</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>Scribus</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

Digkam Photo Management

After your initial installation of Kubuntu, the default photo management application is <application>Digikam</application>.

When you connect a camera to your computer, Kubuntu should pop-up a dialog box asking you for further action. If you select "digiKam Detect and Download", digiKam should open and begin importing pictures.

If auto-detection does not work, launch <application>digiKam</application> by going to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>Graphics</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>digiKam - Photo Management</guimenuitem></menuchoice>. Then select <menuchoice><guimenu>Camera</guimenu><guimenuitem>Add Camera...</guimenuitem></menuchoice> and follow the instructions to add your camera. Once your camera has been setup, you can download pictures from the camera by going to <menuchoice><guimenu>Camera</guimenu><guimenuitem>Your camera</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.
