This chapter contains information about the various multimedia possibilities within Kubuntu.

When you insert an Audio <acronym>CD</acronym> into Kubuntu, the system will recognize it, mount it, and then ask you what you would like to do with the <acronym>CD</acronym>. To play the <acronym>CD</acronym>, select <guilabel>Play Audio CD with Amarok</guilabel> and then press the <guibutton>OK</guibutton> button. If you would like to always play Audio <acronym>CD</acronym>s with <application>Amarok</application>, select the <guilabel>Always do this for this type of media</guilabel> and then press the <guibutton>OK</guibutton>. If you are connected to the Internet, <application>Amarok</application> will retrieve the <acronym>CD</acronym> artist, title, and track data from <ulink url="http://freedb.org">freedb.org</ulink>. If lyrics are available for the song currently playing, select the <guilabel>Lyrics</guilabel> tab. You can also retrieve artist information from <ulink url="http://www.wikipedia.org">Wikipedia</ulink> by selecting the <guilabel>Artist</guilabel> tab.

When you insert an Audio <acronym>CD</acronym> into Kubuntu, the system will recognize it, mount it, and then ask you what you would like to do with the <acronym>CD</acronym>. Choose <guilabel>Extract and Encode Audio Tracks</guilabel> and then press the <guibutton>OK</guibutton>. This will open <application>K3b</application>, the <acronym>CD</acronym> and <acronym>DVD</acronym> Kreator, providing you with various options.

To start <application>K3b</application> manually go to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>Multimedia</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>K3b - CD &amp; DVD Burning</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

Inside <application>K3b</application>, select what tracks you want to rip. All tracks are selected by default.

Press the <guibutton>CD Ripping</guibutton> button. <placeholder-1/>

No MP3 Support by Default

The <acronym>MP3</acronym> protocol is a restricted protocol. In order to utilize it with <application>K3b</application>, please refer to the information at the end of this procedure.

<guilabel>Options</guilabel> - provides settings for filetype (Wave, MP3, Flac, and Ogg-Vorbis), destination directory, and other options. <placeholder-1/>

<guilabel>File Naming</guilabel> - provides settings for file naming pattern, playlist pattern, as well as the ability to remove blanks with a user configurable character.

<guilabel>Advanced</guilabel> - provides settings for paranoia, read retries, and others.

Inside the <guilabel>CD Ripping</guilabel> window you are provided with many options. <placeholder-1/>

Select the <guilabel>Filetype</guilabel> from the <guilabel>Options</guilabel> tab. To the right of the filetype is a blue gear, select that for advanced settings for the filetype selected.

Once all settings are complete press the <guibutton>Start Ripping</guibutton> button.

Once the process is completed, close out of <application>K3b</application>.

<application>K3b</application> can extract audio files to the following formats: <placeholder-1/>

You can also extract CD audio files to the proprietary non-free <emphasis role="strong">MP3</emphasis> format by using the lame encoder. Install the <application>lame</application> to enable recording to the <acronym>MP3</acronym> protocol. Please refer to the <ulink type="help" url="help:/kubuntu/add-applications/">Adding Applications</ulink> documentation for help with installing applications.

You can still play your old MP3 files by installing MP3 support (see <xref linkend="codecs"/>). Instructions for other formats, such as Windows Media Audio (wma/wmv) and other patent encumbered formats can be located in the Ubuntu community documentation at <ulink url="http://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats"/>.

The default music application on your Kubuntu system is the <application>Amarok</application> Music Player, a music management and playback application that looks similar to <application>iTunes</application>. When you first start <application>Amarok</application>, it will scan your home directory for any supported music files you have and add it to the database. To start <application>Amarok</application> go to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>Multimedia</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>Amarok Audio -Player</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

<application>Amarok</application> has an inbuilt ID3 tag editor that can edit the metadata on your OGG and other music files. Please see the <ulink type="help" url="help:/amarok">Amarok Handbook</ulink>.

Using your iPod

You can play music directly off your iPod with <application>Amarok</application>. Simply plug your iPod into the computer, and open <application>Amarok</application>.

To transfer music files to and from an iPod, you can use <application>Amarok</application> as well. Please see the <ulink type="help" url="help:/amarok">Amarok Handbook</ulink> on how to manage media files in your iPod.

Install the <application>audacity</application> package.

To run <application>Audacity</application> go to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>Multimedia</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>Audacity</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

For further help about using <application>Audacity</application>, consult the program's help by choosing <menuchoice><guimenu>Help</guimenu><guisubmenu>Contents</guisubmenu></menuchoice> from within <application>Audacity</application>.

Many video formats can be played in Kubuntu using free codecs found in the repositories. This includes formats such as MPEG, AVI, and RM(Real Media). To install further codec support see <xref linkend="codecs"/>.

In Kubuntu, videos can be played with the <application>Kaffeine</application> Media Player. Some features of <application>Kaffeine</application> include custom playlists, DVD playback and more. You can start <application>Kaffeine</application> by going to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>Multimedia</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>Kaffeine - Media Player</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

DVD Playback

The movie players provided in Kubuntu are capable of reading DVDs that are not encrypted. However, most commercial DVDs are encrypted with CSS (Content Scrambling System) and currently, for legal reasons, it is not possible to include support for these DVDs in Kubuntu. However, it is possible to enable support as follows:

Install the <application>libdvdread3</application> package.

Open <application>Konsole</application> by going to <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guisubmenu>System</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>Konsole - Terminal Program</guimenuitem></menuchoice>. Type the following command into a terminal prompt followed by pressing the <keycap>Enter</keycap> key (if asked for a password, enter your user password and press the <keycap>Enter</keycap> key): <screen> sudo /usr/share/doc/libdvdread3/install-css.sh </screen>

<application>Kino</application> is an advanced video editor. It features excellent integration with IEEE-1394 (Firewire) for capture, VTR control, and recording back of the camera. It captures video to disk in Raw DV and AVI format, in both type-1 DV and type-2 DV (separate audio stream) encoding. For more information, see <ulink url="http://www.kinodv.org/article/static/2">the Kino website</ulink>. To use it:

Install the <application>kino</application> package.
