To restart Kubuntu, or the <productname>X Window System</productname>, simply press <keycombo><keycap>Ctrl</keycap><keycap>Alt</keycap><keycap>Backspace</keycap></keycombo>. This will take you to a blank screen momentarily and then bring you back to the login screen (<acronym>KDM</acronym>).
