The <emphasis>GNU Project</emphasis>, pronounced “guh-noo”, was launched in 1984 to develop a complete UNIX style operating system which is comprised of free software: the GNU system. Variants of the GNU operating system, which use the Linux kernel, are now widely used; though these systems are often referred to as “Linux,” they are more accurately called GNU/Linux systems.
<emphasis>Projekt GNU</emphasis> se je začel leta 1984 z namenom razvoja UNIXu podobnega operacijskega sistema, ki bi obsegal le prosto programje, sistema GNU. Različice operacijskega sistema GNU, ki uporabljajo jedro Linux, so danes široko uporabljene. Čeprav se te sisteme pogosto imenuje kar "Linux", je bolj točno poimenovanje GNU/Linux.
