"Free software" not only means that you shouldn't have to pay for it, it also means that you should be able to use the software in any way you wish. So apart from the fact that Free Software is often available without charge, this freedom also has technical advantages: when programs are developed, the hard work of others can be used and built upon. Die Philosophie von Freier Software ist, daß Menschen die Freiheit haben sollten Software auf jede Weise zu nutzen, die "sozial nützlich" ist. "Freie Software" heißt nicht bloß, daß man nicht dafür zahlen sollte, sondern auch, daß man in der Lage sein sollte, die Software auf jede erdenkliche Weise zu nutzen, die man sich wünscht. Der Quellcode von freier Software ist für jedermann zugänglich zum downloaden, verändern, Fehler beheben, und jede andere Art und Weise. Also, abgesehen davon, daß freie Software oft kostenlos erhältlich ist, hat diese Freiheit auch einen technischen Vorteil: Wenn Programme entwickelt werden, kann die harte Arbeit anderer Entwickler benutzt und eingebaut werden. Das kann mit nicht-freier Software nicht passieren, denn wenn etwas entwickelt wird, dann muß es ganz von Anfang an geschrieben werden. Deswegen ist die Entwicklung von Freier Software schnell, effizient und spannend!
