Pppconfig est un outil interactif fonctionnant avec des menus pour
faciliter la création d'une connexion PPP téléphonique. Il gère actuellement
PAP, CHAP et chat pour l'authentification. Il utilise les fichiers standards
de configuration de pppd. Il n'établit pas la connexion à votre fournisseur
d'accès mais se contente de configurer cette connexion pour que vous
puissiez ensuite l'établir avec un outil comme « pon ». Il peut détecter
votre modem et configurer PPP pour utiliser une gestion dynamique des paramètres
DNS, pour utiliser des FAI multiples et une connexion à la demande.
Avant d'utiliser pppconfig, vous devez connaître la méthode d'authentification
utilisée par votre FAI, l'identifiant et le mot de passe qu'il vous a fournis
et le numéro d'appel vers ce FAI. Vous pouvez également être amené à fournir,
pour l'authentification avec chat, les invites de connexion et de demande de
mot de passe utilisées, ainsi que toutes autres invites et réponses nécessaires.
Si ces informations ne peuvent pas être obtenues de votre FAI, vous pouvez
tenter de vous y connecter avec minicom et effectuer les réponses vous-même
jusqu'à obtenir l'affichage « aléatoire » qui indique l'établissement de la
connexion PPP.
Comme pppconfig effectue des modifications dans les fichiers de configuration
du système, il ne peut être utilisé qu'avec les privilèges du superutilisateur.
