With an empty image, any of the numerous tools available in <application>Gimp</application> can be used to create a masterpiece! When the image has been created, it can be saved. To save a file in Gimp, go to <menuchoice><guimenu>File</guimenu><guisubmenu>Save</guisubmenu></menuchoice> and choose a location where the file will be saved. <application>Gimp</application> requires that that a file type be selected for the image being saved (png, jpg etc.). So the file extension must be specified for the image being saved. One of the choices, .xcf, is the default extension for <application>Gimp</application>. It is the preferred file type that maintains the edit history of the image, which is helpful if the file is expected to be edited further in Gimp.
