In Linux days of old, installing applications meant that users had to issue commands such as configure, make, and make install using source software packages. Debian (upon which Kubuntu depends heavily) has made it easy for users to install applications without having to mess around with dependencies, command line configuring, special command sequences, lengthy waits and other nuisances.
