Xubuntu is an entirely open source operating system built around the <emphasis>Linux</emphasis> kernel. The Xubuntu community - being a part of the larger Ubuntu community - is built around the ideals enshrined in the <ulink url="http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/philosophy">Ubuntu Philosophy</ulink>: that software should be available free of charge, that software tools should be usable by people in their local language and despite any disabilities, and that people should have the freedom to customize and alter their software in whatever way they see fit. For those reasons, the following principles that Ubuntu is built upon also apply to Xubuntu:
Xubuntu is een geheel open source besturingssysteem gebaseerd op de <emphasis>Linux</emphasis>-kernel. De Xubuntu gemeenschap, onderdeel van de grotere Ubuntu gemeenschap, is gebaseerd op de <ulink url="http://www.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/philosophy">Ubuntu filosofie</ulink>: dat software gratis beschikbaar hoort te zijn, dat software te gebruiken moet zijn in de taal van de gebruiker en ondanks eventuele handicaps, en dat mensen de vrijheid moeten hebben om de software aan te passen of te wijzigen op welke manier men ook wil. Om die redenen zijn de volgende principes waar Ubuntu op is gefundeerd, ook van toepassing op Xubuntu.
