A majority of printers are supported by Kubuntu. <application>KDEPrint</application> allows you to add printers, modify their settings, monitor printing jobs, disable or restart a printer, as well as printer sharing.

An addition to Kubuntu 8.04 is the <application>HP Device Manager</application> which eases the configuration of <acronym>HP</acronym> Multifunction Devices (<acronym>MFD</acronym>s), printers that function as copiers and scanners, as well as other <acronym>HP</acronym> printers. It is recommended that if you have a direct connection via <acronym>USB</acronym>, <acronym>LPT</acronym> (parallel port), or network (direct connection or JetDirect) that you use this application. This application does not work with printers set up on a shared network printer using <application>Samba</application>, if your printer is configured this way, it is recommended that you see <xref linkend="print-network"/>.

To open the <application>HP Device Manager</application>, press <keycombo><keycap>Alt</keycap><keycap>F2</keycap></keycombo> and when prompted with the <guilabel>Run Command</guilabel> dialog, type in <userinput>hp-toolbox</userinput> followed by pressing the <guibutton>OK</guibutton> button or pressing the <keycap>Enter</keycap> key. If it is your first time opening the application, you will receive the <guilabel>No Installed HP Devices Found</guilabel> dialog. You will be presented with three choices; <guibutton>Setup Device...</guibutton>, <guibutton>CUPS Web Interface</guibutton>, and <guibutton>Close</guibutton>. To setup your printer select the <guibutton>Setup Device...</guibutton> button. When prompted for a password, enter your user password and then press the <guibutton>OK</guibutton> button. At this point you would select the option that suits your configuration and follow through with the setup. The <application>HP Device Manager</application> has the ability to automatically detect any attached devices, or to scan your network for any compatible devices.

Once the <application>hplip-docs</application> are installed, they can be accessed by going to either <menuchoice><guimenu>Help</guimenu><guimenuitem>Contents...</guimenuitem></menuchoice> or directing your browser to <ulink url="file:///usr/share/doc/hplip-doc/HTML/index.html"/>.

A local printer is one that is directly attached to your computer (as opposed to a network printer, discussed in the following section). To setup a new local printer:

Obtain the model name of your printer and ensure the printer is powered on.

Choose <menuchoice><guimenu>KMenu</guimenu><guimenuitem>System Settings</guimenuitem></menuchoice> and select <guilabel>Printers</guilabel>. This will open the <application>KDEPrint</application> system dialog.

Now choose <menuchoice><guimenu>Add</guimenu><guimenuitem>Add Printer/Class...</guimenuitem></menuchoice>

Your printer should be automatically detected. If so, simply click <guibutton>Next &gt;</guibutton> and then <guibutton>Finish</guibutton>.
