The frontend is written in gtk+/cairo, the database uses sqlite3, raw image loading is done using libraw, high-dynamic range, and standard image formats such as jpeg are also supported. The core operates completely on floating point values, so darktable can not only be used for photography but also for scientifically acquired images or output of renderers (high dynamic range).

L'interface est écrite en gtk+/cairo, la base de donnée utilise sqlite3, le chargement de l'image brute est effectué via Libraw, à plage dynamique élevée et les formats d'image standard tels que JPEG sont également pris en charge. Le noyau fonctionne entièrement en virgule flottante, ainsi Darktable peut être utilisé non seulement pour la photographie mais aussi pour des images scientifique ou pour la sortie avec un rendu à large plage dynamique.
