Converting unsupported file types

Some types of file cannot be used in Ubuntu

Check to see whether the file types you use are supported

Press <menuchoice><guimenuitem>Start</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>All Programs</guimenuitem><guisubmenu>Accessories</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>Command Prompt</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

Internet Explorer 6

Select the folder from which you want to export your favorites. Selecting the <guilabel>Favorites</guilabel> folder will export all of them. Press <guibutton>Next</guibutton>.

Internet Explorer 7

To backup your <application>Microsoft Internet Explorer 7</application> web browser:

Press <menuchoice><guimenuitem>Favorites</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

Click the arrow beside the <guibutton>Add To Favorites</guibutton> button. Then click Import/Export.

Internet Explorer 8

To backup your <application>Microsoft Internet Explorer 8</application> web browser:

Press the <guibutton>Favorites</guibutton> button.

Click the arrow beside the <guibutton>Add To Favorites...</guibutton> button.

Select <guilabel>Import and Export...</guilabel>

Select <guilabel>Export to a file</guilabel> and press <guibutton>Next</guibutton>.

Check the box for <guilabel>Favorites</guilabel> and press <guibutton>Next</guibutton>.

Click <guibutton>Browse...</guibutton> to select a file name and location to save the exported favorites to. Press <guibutton>Export</guibutton>.

Press <guibutton>Finish</guibutton>.

Press <menuchoice><guimenuitem>Bookmarks</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Organize Bookmarks...</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

Press <menuchoice><guimenuitem>Import and Backup</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Export HTML...</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

These instructions are intended for users of <application>Microsoft Outlook Express 6</application>. If you are a user of a different version of <application>Outlook Express</application>, you may find instructions specific to that version from the <ulink url="https://help.ubuntu.com/community">Ubuntu community support website</ulink>.

You do not need to export mail messages if you use IMAP for retrieving email from your mail server - the email is still stored on the server. You only need to export mail messages if you use POP3 to retrieve email from your mail server. This is because by default the email will not be persisted on the server after it has been downloaded to your computer when using POP3.

Removable storage devices such as external hard disks will have a certain type of <emphasis>file system</emphasis>. For use on removable devices, the best supported file system for Ubuntu is <emphasis>FAT</emphasis> (also called <emphasis>FAT32</emphasis> or <emphasis>vfat</emphasis>).

Please note that FAT32 only supports a maximum file size of 4GB. If you plan on transferring larger files, like DVD images, you should choose a different file system, like NTFS.

To access your Home folder, press <menuchoice><guimenu>Places</guimenu><guimenuitem>Home Folder</guimenuitem></menuchoice>. You may find it useful to have separate folders for different types of files, and some folders may already exist by default such as <filename>Documents</filename>, <filename>Music</filename>, <filename>Pictures</filename>, and <filename>Videos</filename>. This will help to keep things organized and you will be able to find your files more quickly and easily if they are categorized in this manner. You can create new folders inside your Home folder by pressing <menuchoice><guimenuitem>File</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Create Folder</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

Insert the disc into the disc drive of your computer. After a short while, a disc icon should appear on your desktop.

Open your Home folder, then open the <emphasis>Pictures</emphasis> folder. If it does not exist, you can create the folder first by pressing <menuchoice><guimenuitem>File</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Create Folder</guimenuitem></menuchoice> and typing <userinput>Pictures</userinput>.

The <application>Import</application> screen should be shown. If it is not, press the <guibutton>Import</guibutton> button or go to <menuchoice><guimenuitem>Photo</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Import...</guimenuitem></menuchoice> to show it.

To prevent two copies of your photos from being stored, un-check the <guilabel>Copy file to the Pictures folder</guilabel>.

Open your Home folder, then open the <emphasis>Music</emphasis> folder. If it does not exist, you can create the folder first by pressing <menuchoice><guimenuitem>File</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Create Folder</guimenuitem></menuchoice> and typing <userinput>Music</userinput>.

Select the location you would like to copy the saved emails into by pressing the button labeled <guilabel>Destination folder</guilabel>. By default this will be the <filename>Inbox</filename> folder, which is the recommended destination for your emails. Then, press <guibutton>Forward</guibutton>.

Select the backup file for your address book and press <guibutton>Open</guibutton>.

Select the backup file for your calendar and press <guibutton>Open</guibutton>.

Press <menuchoice><guimenuitem>Bookmarks</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Organize Bookmarks...</guimenuitem></menuchoice> to launch the <application>Bookmark Manager</application>.

Press <menuchoice><guimenuitem>Import and Backup</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Import HTML...</guimenuitem></menuchoice> and choose the <guilabel>From an HTML File</guilabel> option, then press <guibutton>Next</guibutton>.

Find and select the file which you originally exported from <application>Internet Explorer</application> (see <xref linkend="preparing-bookmarks"/>) and press <guibutton>Open</guibutton>.

Use <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guimenuitem>Ubuntu Software Center</guimenuitem></menuchoice> to install applications from Ubuntu&rsquo;s software library, or to remove existing applications from your computer. Use <menuchoice><guimenu>System</guimenu><guimenuitem>Administration</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Synaptic Package Manager</guimenuitem></menuchoice> for more advanced tasks.

Open <menuchoice><guimenu>System</guimenu><guimenuitem>Administration</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Printing</guimenuitem></menuchoice> to set up printers.

The three menus at the top left of the screen - <guimenu>Applications</guimenu>, <guimenu>Places</guimenu>, and <guimenu>System</guimenu> - contain most of the same things as the Start menu in Windows.

To check for updates to Ubuntu, open <menuchoice><guimenu>System</guimenu><guimenuitem>Administration</guimenuitem><guimenuitem>Update Manager</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.
