The Ubuntu Documentation Project

Explore Ubuntu's Games menu by pressing <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guimenuitem>Games</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

Ubuntu comes with 16 games by default, including <application>Aisleriot Solitaire</application>, <application>Gnometris</application> and <application>Mines</application>. There are many more games which can be installed optionally. This section is intended to give a summary of some of the games which are available for you to install and play.

Popular Games

Neverball

<application>Neverball</application>, part puzzle and part action game, is a test of skill. The object of the game is to roll the ball through an obstacle course before time runs out by tilting the floor.

Included with the <application>Neverball</application> package is the game <application>Neverputt</application>. <application>Neverputt</application> is a hot-seat multiplayer miniature golf game based on <application>Neverball</application>. Installing <application>Neverputt</application> by itself is not currently possible.

Scorched3D

To start <application>Scorched3D</application>, choose <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guisubmenu>Games</guisubmenu><guimenuitem>Scorched 3D</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

Chromium

Install the <application>chromium</application> package from the <quote>Universe</quote> repository (see <ulink type="help" url="ghelp:add-applications">Add Applications</ulink>).

Press <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guisubmenu>Games</guisubmenu><guisubmenu>Chromium</guisubmenu></menuchoice> to play <application>Chromium</application>.

Frozen Bubble

<application>Frozen Bubble</application> is a clone of the popular <emphasis>Puzzle Bobble</emphasis> game. The object of the game is to shoot bubbles into groups of the same color to cause them to pop. Features include 100 single-player levels, a two-player mode, as well as music and striking graphics. More information about the game can be found on the <ulink url="http://www.frozen-bubble.org/">Frozen Bubble website</ulink>.

Press <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guisubmenu>Games</guisubmenu><guisubmenu>Frozen Bubble</guisubmenu></menuchoice> to play <application>Frozen Bubble</application>.

SuperTux

Press <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guisubmenu>Games</guisubmenu><guisubmenu>SuperTux</guisubmenu></menuchoice> to start the <application>SuperTux</application> game.

PlanetPenguin Racer

<application>PlanetPenguin Racer</application> is a fork created from the last GPL-licenced version of <emphasis>Tux Racer</emphasis>. In addition to the levels from the original game, <application>PlanetPenguin Racer</application> also includes additional levels which have been developed by the community. The object of the game is to slide down the mountain, collecting fish as you go, and trying to reach the finish line in the shortest amount of time.

Press <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guisubmenu>Games</guisubmenu><guisubmenu>Planet Penguin Racer</guisubmenu></menuchoice> to play the game.

Tremulous

<application>Tremulous</application> is a free, open source game that blends a team based First Person Shooter (FPS) with elements of a Real Time Strategy (RTS) game. Players can choose from two unique races, aliens and humans. The objective is to eliminate the opposing team by not only killing the opposing players but also removing their ability to respawn by destroying the spawn structures. Press <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guisubmenu>Games</guisubmenu><guisubmenu>Tremulous</guisubmenu></menuchoice> to play <application>Tremulous</application>.

Nexuiz

Press <menuchoice><guimenu>Applications</guimenu><guisubmenu>Games</guisubmenu><guisubmenu>Nexuiz</guisubmenu></menuchoice> to start <application>Nexuiz</application>.

Arcade Games

Arcade games are usually simple, fun games. A large collection of arcade games is available with Ubuntu; listed below are just a few of them.

Classic arcade games

<application>KBounce</application> is a game where the object is to catch several moving balls in a rectangular game field by building walls. More balls are added with each level that you complete successfully; how many can you catch?

<application>KSirtet</application> is a <emphasis>Tetris</emphasis> clone which allows multiplayer duels as well as duels against the computer player.

<application>KSmiletris</application> is yet another clone of <emphasis>Tetris</emphasis>, which is easy to learn and play.

<application>Robots</application> is a game where the object is to avoid a hoard of robots who are trying to catch you. With every step you make, the robots get closer to getting you and you must do whatever you can to avoid them.

Maze games

<application>KTron</application> is based on the popular computer game for two players as well as the famous movie. It is a fast paced game in which both players have to move and avoid colliding with any walls, the opponent, or the paths that you or your opponent have created.

<application>Nibbles</application> is a game where the user controls a snake, moving it around the board and eating diamonds while avoiding the walls. <application>Nibbles</application> also features network multiplayer, and up to four worms can be controlled by the computer.

Space games

<application>KAsteroids</application> is a fast arcade shooting game where you command a spaceship trying to survive the passage through an asteroid field. Destroy asteroids by shooting them until they split into smaller and smaller parts.

<application>KSpaceDuel</application> is a space game for two players, however one player can be controlled by the computer. Each player controls a satellite that flies around the Sun, all the while trying not to collide with anything and trying to shoot at the other space ship.

Card, Puzzle and Board Games

Card and puzzle games are very popular, and Ubuntu has a large collection of such games for you to choose from. A list of some of the more popular games available is given below.
