You are now ready to use <application>Kooka</application> to start scanning.

Locate your the correct driver for your scanner and uncomment it by removing/deleting the <filename>#</filename>.

Kubuntu offers support for a variety of scanners. Want to know if your scanner is supported? If so then review the <ulink url="https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsScanners">Scanner Hardware Support</ulink> wiki page as well as the <ulink url="http://www.sane-project.org/sane-backends.html">SANE Projects list of supported scanners</ulink>.

Once you have researched and found out that your scanner is supported, installation is the next step. A majority of the supported <acronym>USB</acronym> scanners will automatically get installed. If your scanner does not automatically install and is listed as supported, or even if it isn't listed, refer to the following installation instructions.

Highlight or select the printer that you want to share.

<mousebutton>Right</mousebutton> click the printer you wish to test and select <guimenuitem>Test Printer...</guimenuitem>

At the <guilabel>Run as root - KDE su</guilabel> dialog, enter your user password and press the <guibutton>OK</guibutton> button.

Once highlighted go to <menuchoice><guimenu>Print Server</guimenu><guimenuitem>Share Printers on Local Network</guimenuitem></menuchoice>.

At the <guilabel>Warning</guilabel> dialog press the <guibutton>Print Test Page</guibutton> button.

At the <guilabel>Printer Settings</guilabel> dialog, press the <guibutton>Scan</guibutton> button. If you receive any authentication errors, press the <guibutton>&lt; Back</guibutton> button and try the previous step with a different authentication setting. If all goes well, select the remote printer and press <guibutton>Next &gt;</guibutton>.

For this step, there are two possible choices concerning the dialog you will see. If the drivers were automatically setup, then you will see the <guilabel>Printer Test</guilabel> dialog. If the drivers weren't automatically setup, then you will be shown the <guilabel>Driver Selection</guilabel> dialog.

At the <guilabel>Printer Test</guilabel> dialog, you can either test print to verify operation of your printer or move on. Which ever decision you make, when complete press the <guibutton>Next &gt;</guibutton> button.

At the <guilabel>Driver Selection</guilabel> dialog, you will be prompted to select an appropriate driver. If there is a driver with <emphasis>[recommended]</emphasis>, select this printer and press <guibutton>Next &gt;</guibutton>. If there isn't a recommended driver, try each driver until you find one that is suitable for your printer.

At the <guilabel>Printer Quota Settings</guilabel> dialog, you can setup the size of the quota you wish to enable for the printer. This would be the maximum file size or maximum amount of pages you want to allow at any one time through the printer. Once complete press <guibutton>Next &gt;</guibutton>.

<guilabel>Confirmation</guilabel> is the final dialog you will be presented. Verify the information is correct and then press <guibutton>Finish</guibutton> to complete the installation.

At the <guilabel>Banner Selection</guilabel> dialog, you can select the default <guilabel>Starting</guilabel> and <guilabel>Ending</guilabel> banners. These are the header and footer of the page printed. Once complete press <guibutton>Next &gt;</guibutton>.

At the <guilabel>General Information</guilabel> dialog, you must insert at least a <guilabel>Name</guilabel> for the printer. Once complete press <guibutton>Next &gt;</guibutton>.

At the <guilabel>User Access Settings</guilabel> dialog, you can enforce access to the printer to certain users or groups. Once complete press <guibutton>Next &gt;</guibutton>.

After KDE builds the driver database, the <guilabel>Printer Model Selection</guilabel> dialog will appear with a list of <guilabel>Manufacturer</guilabel> and <guilabel>Model</guilabel> information. Locate your printer and highlight the corresponding drivers and press <guibutton>Next &gt;</guibutton>. If no information pertaining to your printer is found, please search the databases at <ulink url="http://www.linuxprinting.org">LinuxPrinting.org</ulink> or check the <ulink url="https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsPrinters">Kubuntu Wiki's Printer Page</ulink> for possible information on your printer.

Now choose <menuchoice><guimenu>Add</guimenu><guimenuitem>Add Printer/Class...</guimenuitem></menuchoice>

You can also configure your Kubuntu system to send print jobs to a remote print server. Remote printers are hosted or attached somewhere else on your network. To configure a remote printer:

At the <guilabel>User Identification</guilabel> dialog, select the type of authentication that is used by either the remote printer or the system that is sharing the remote printer. <emphasis role="bold">TIP:</emphasis> if you are unsure, try with <guilabel>Anonymous (no login/password)</guilabel> and press the <guibutton>Next &gt;</guibutton>. If this fails, try with <guilabel>Guest account (login="guest")</guilabel> and so on.

Your printer should be automatically detected. If so, simply click <guibutton>Next &gt;</guibutton> and then <guibutton>Finish</guibutton>.

Finally, you can enter in a description and location for your printer

If your printer was not automatically detected, you can try to select the port and printer driver manually. Some printers need further setup. Search the databases at <ulink url="http://www.linuxprinting.org">LinuxPrinting.org</ulink> or check the <ulink url="https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardwareSupportComponentsPrinters">Kubuntu Wiki's Printer Page</ulink> for possible information on your printer.

A majority of printers are supported by Kubuntu. <application>KDEPrint</application> allows you to add printers, modify their settings, monitor printing jobs, disable or restart a printer, as well as printer sharing.

A local printer is one that is directly attached to your computer (as opposed to a network printer, discussed in the following section). To setup a new local printer:

Obtain the model name of your printer and ensure the printer is powered on.
