[feisty/x86] new libX11 with XCB crashes Matlab

Bug Description

Trying to open any window in Matlab7 causes the whole application to crash. It is probably matlab's fault, as it is an 'old beast' using lots of depreceated APIs. The error I got is:

MATLAB: xcb_xlib.c:41: xcb_xlib_lock: Assertion `!c->xlib.lock' failed.
Aborted

Temporary fix is to revert to pre-XCB libX11.

You're right the problem comes from mathlab, see http://people.debian.org/~terpstra/message/20061127.041128.8a08d75f.en.html

Since mathlab is not in ubuntu, I will reject this bug. Please report it upstream, thanks

Changed in libx11:
status: Unconfirmed → Rejected

Agreed, that the bug is not within Ubuntu. But how am I supposed to run buggy, obsolete commercial software in Feisty?
Maybe a choice of libX11 could be included? Or preloading of old libX11 ? Say: run_with_old_libx11 <commercial_application_binary> ?

I really doubt that commercial vendors will release bugfixes for their products. It's probably not only Matlab, but some others closed-source products, as Cedega, as well

Wit: the new xorg is also in Fedora 7, so Mathworks will get bugreports about this issue, sooner or later. That said, it would be nice to let them know that this issue exists with Ubuntu 7.04 as well. They release new versions twice a year, so a fix could get in sooner than later. I don't think there's much hope for older versions, though.

I already bugged their support about this problem. Waiting for a non-automated reply. If I get one, I'll post it here.
