Many of the plugins provide basic audio playback, and you may check a few more boxes, for example, to access the Magnatune Store or to provide a consistent playback volume (ReplayGain). \marginnote{A microphone is used for making audio/video calls which are supported by applications like \application{Skype} or \application{Empathy}. It can also be used for sound recording.} The \emph{Output} tab will have a list of all the sound cards available in your system. Usually there is only one listed; however, if you have a graphics card which supports \acronym{HDMI} audio, it will also show up in the list. \marginnote{If you change your sound output device, it will remain as default.} The \emph{Output} tab is used for configuring the output of audio. You can increase/decrease and mute/unmute output volume and select your preferred output device. If you have more than one output device, it will be listed in the section which reads ``Choose a device for sound output.'' The default output hardware, which is automatically detected by Ubuntu during installation will be selected. This section also allows you to change the balance of sound on the left and right speakers of your desktop/laptop. A new option introduced in Ubuntu 14.04 LTS will allow you to increase the output volume past 100. You need to check the box "Allow louder than 100\%".

There are numerous ways to install software on an operating system. In Ubuntu, the quickest and easiest way to find and install new applications is through the \application{Ubuntu Software Center}. The Software Center is your very own store-front and gives you instant access to thousands of great applications. Some of these applications are free to download whereas others are available commercially. Each application within the Software Center comes with ratings and reviews making it easier for you to decide which of the applications you want to install.

When you enable recommendations, a list of locally installed software will be periodically sent to servers of Canonical. Recommendations will appear in the same panel. If you want to disable these recommendations, go to \menu{View \then Turn Off Recommendations.}

Canonical will release a new version of the Ubuntu operating system every six months. Almost every release is a \define{normal release}. However, every fourth release\dash or every 2 years\dash Canonical releases a \define{long-term support} (\acronym{LTS}) version of the operating system. Long-term support releases are intended to be the most stable releases available and are supported for a longer period of time. Ubuntu 14.04 is an LTS release. Ubuntu 14.10 is a normal release.
