Ubuntu was conceived in 2004 by Mark Shuttleworth, a successful South African entrepreneur, and his company \Index[Canonical]{\gls{Canonical}}. \marginnote{To learn more about Canonical, go to \url{http://www.canonical.com}.} Shuttleworth recognized the power of Linux and open source, but was also aware of weaknesses that prevented mainstream use.

Ask Ubuntu is a free, community-driven website for Ubuntu users and developers. Like the Ubuntu Forums, it allows users to post questions for other members of the Ubuntu community to answer. But Ask Ubuntu also allows visitors to ``vote'' on the answers users provide, so the most useful or helpful responses get featured more prominently on the site. Ask Ubuntu is part of the Stack Exchange network of websites and is one of the best free Ubuntu support resources available. Visit \url{http://www.askubuntu.com} to get started.
