The panel will then shrink so that it is just long enough to accommodate any applets or program launchers that are currently sitting in it. Ticking the \button{Autohide} button will cause your panel to ``fold'' up into the edge of the screen when you are not using it, and remain hidden until you move your mouse cursor back to that screen edge.
