<p>Creato nel 2006, Mahara è il risultato di una collaborazione finanziata dalla neozelandese Tertiary Education Commission e l'E-learning Collaborative Development Fund (eCDF) con il coinvolgimento della Massey University, l'Auckland University of Technology, The Open Polytechnic della Nuova Zelanda e la Victoria University di Wellington. </p>
<p>Mahara è un sistema completo che include strumenti quali Portfolio digitale, Weblog, Social Network e creazione Curriculum Vitae on line (Resumè), che permette agli Utenti di comunicare tra loro e creare Comunità virtuali. Mahara è stato progettato per fornire agli Utenti gli strumenti necessari a creare un ambiente di apprendimento e di sviluppo personale e professionale.</p>
<p>Il nome Mahara significa `pensare' o 'pensiero ' nella lingua Te Reo Maori. Il nome trasmette la dedizione e l'intenzione dei collaboratori del progetto a voler creare un'applicazione centrata sulla crescita e sull'apprendimento continuo degli Utenti, nella convinzione che la tecnologia non può trovare sviluppo al di fuori di considerazioni pedagogiche e politiche.</p>
<p>Mahara è distribuito gratuitamente come Software Open Source (sotto la GNU General Public License). In breve, ciò significa che vi è permesso di copiare, utilizzare e modificare Mahara a condizione che vi impegniate a: </p>
