All editing is fully non-destructive and only operates on cached image buffers for display. the full image is only converted during export. The frontend is written in gtk+/cairo, the database uses sqlite3, raw image loading is done using rawspeed, high-dynamic range, and standard image formats such as jpeg are also supported. Všetky úpravy sú plne nedeštruktívne a pracujú iba so zobrazeným obrázkom vo vyrovnávacej pamäti. Úplný obrázok sa prevedie iba počas exportu. Rozhranie je napísané v Gtk+/Cairo, databáza používa Sqlite3, načítanie obrázkov RAW pomocou rawspeed, HDR a štandardné obrázkové formáty ako JPEG sú tiež podporované. Jadro pracuje kompletne s plávajúcou desatinnou čiarkou, takže Darktable možno použiť nielen na fotografiu, ale aj na vedecky získané obrázky alebo výstup vykresľovačov (HDR).
